National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme, having been introduced into the Higher Education realm in 1969-70 — Mahatma Gandhi’s birth centenary year — was the culmination of a long-drawn discussion by popular national leaders and educationalists on making education more realistic and community-oriented. The Scheme was originally envisaged for implementation at the undergraduate level and was launched through 38 Universities on a pilot project basis. The programme focuses on inspiring and inculcating the spirit of service-mindedness and social responsibility in students.  The NSS volunteers strive to ensure that the needy get assistance to enhance their living standards and thus lead a life of dignity. During natural or man-made disasters, they provide first aid, food, clothing and shelter to the victims. From the initial stage itself, the MGMCET NSS Unit has been undertaking various support programmes. These include digital literacy, non-formal education, pre-school education, educating the school-dropouts, forming school libraries and book banks, conducting awareness programmes, blood donation camps and cultural activities. We are proud to announce that our unit was honored with the prestigious Indira Gandhi National Award for the Best NSS Unit and for the Best Programme Officer(To Mr.Shajahan C.M, Asst. Professor, Department of ME) in recognition of the activities during 2014-2015. Currently our college has two active NSS units, (Unit No.s: 246 &574) with 160 volunteers
